... The Sanctuary is our nation’s oldest Beaux-style building and the oldest church in downtown Seattle. It is very much a
Seattle story beginning in 1853 with about 30 worshippers who attended services in a log cabin. In 1855, the congregation
dedicated Seattle’s first church at Second Avenue and Columbia Street. In 1887, a growing congregation sold that property
to build a second church at Marion Street and Third Avenue. In 2005, city planners approved a 33-story tower that would
have demolished The Sanctuary. However, communit leaders implored the church to save The Sanctuary and in 2007, Daniels
Real Estate successfully negotiated to purchase the building from the congregation. The agreement saved The Sanctuar
and included the construction of a new church for the congregation to continue their good work ...
